Free for Pipe Band Members

I had a walk through Glasgow’s excellent Museum of Transport last week.  In one area of the museum, that displaying 1950s train stuff, there was an intriguing notice; I include it here:

british transport notice 1950 free passage for pipe band members

It’s hard to imagine a time when pipe band members anywhere would ride the rails – or the bus – for free.  I assume a pipe band member would need to be in uniform to receive a gratis fare; still, a remarkable commentary on the lofty place of the pipe band (and those who were a playing part of it) in post-war Scotland.

Times have changed, haven’t they.
